What Happens if My Child Forgets to Bring their Homework in?

Hi everyone! Let me tell you a little more about the homework routine. What happens when someone forgets their homework? Well, every time your child forgets to bring their homework back I send home a missed homework slip. It tells you what happened and has a spot for your signature. If I do not see the missed homework slip come back to school I send another one or email you to see if you were aware. In the beginning of the year, I let students adjust to the homework routine for a couple weeks, then if they are forgetting homework after that, they may have to do their homework in school that day. I usually acknowledge that they completed their homework in school that day on the missed homework slip. The reading log cannot be done in school; however, all other homework could be made up during the day. If I notice your child is having a lot of difficulty remembering their homework we will discuss some strategies for helping them.

Some general tips for homework success:
  • Have a consistent location at home where the homework gets done, such as a kitchen table, desk etc.
  • Keep supplies like pencils and erasers nearby.
  • With nightly homework, have your child put it back in the folder and their backpack as soon as they are done to reduce the risk they will forget it. The mornings are often hectic and homework left on a table could get left behind.
  • For weekly homework, like  the reading log, find a really safe place for it, like the refrigerator or at that consistent homework spot. Some families also like to have their child keep their reading log in their folder and only take it out to write what books they read, then put it right back in the folder.
  • Pick a consistent time if possible to do homework (like as soon as he gets off the bus, or after he eats a  snack, or after Cub Scouts). This helps some students. Sometimes it just doesn't work to do it at the same time each night.
I hope these tips help and we can discuss more ideas in person if need be!

How to Complete Greg Tang's DigiCross and NumTanga Puzzles

Math homework will often be a variety of puzzles from Greg Tang Math which incorporate fact practice and problem solving along with a variety of other concepts in a fun way. (some of these are games on his website, www.GregTangMath.com )  We do these in class several times a week and I always provide instruction, but in case students forget what to do or you would like some info, I made a video on how to solve each puzzle.  Here is the video for DigiCross and NumTanga. Enjoy!

What is Xtra Math?

Recently your child brought home an flyer for Xtra math. When you get a chance, log on with your child to Xtra math using the information on the flyer. Xtra math is a fun math fact website where your child can practice math facts using technology! No more paper flash cards like when I was in school. Practicing math facts is not the be all end all of classroom mathematics (see the Common Core State Standards) but familiarity with facts is very useful. All second grade classes have a goal this year of helping students master math facts this year. The expectation is that at the end of second grade, students should have mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts. Yes, subtraction too! In school we will be doing Xtra math as a class about twice or three times a month (we will also be doing other activities in class to increase math fact fluency) but I would recommend you have your child go online to Xtramath.org two or more times a week. Each time your child logs in, the t...
